The core team

The team at Discovery have a vast knowledge of the health and safety industry, clocking up over 70 years of experience.

 

Sandy Falconer - Managing Director & Trainer

Founder of Discovery Consultancy Sandy began his career with the UK Civil Service in 1971 where he was firstly responsible for assessing disabled people and recommending further training to enable them to return to full time employment. He then began providing a training resource to industry in Scotland before becoming Training Manager at Dundee Skill Centre.

From there Sandy joined Don & Low Ltd as a Training and Safety manager responsible for the implementation and maintenance of their Safety Management System.

In 1990, Sandy began Discovery Consultancy as Health, Safety and Training Consultancy. Since that time he has been a national health and safety Advisor to BUPA Hospitals Ltd, forming part of their Head Office Risk Management team. He has also presented a range of Safety related training programmes for RGIT and Petrofac International Ltd as well as specializing in designing courses to meet specific organisational criteria, and providing a health and safety consultancy service to a number of other organisations.

To complement his wealth of experience, Sandy also holds the following professional certificates and qualifications.

  • Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH)
  • Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (Chartered FCIPD)
  • Member of the Institute of Public Health and Hygiene (MRIPHH)

 

 

Norman McLaren - Consultant

Norman is used to running an efficient and disciplined service compliments of his background as a Royal Navy Commander. Starting his Navy career as an Occupational Health Physicist and Health and Safety Officer, Norman then became Head of Training at the Institute of Naval Medicine and was finally appointed Radiation Protection Adviser and Health and Safety Director.

As a civilian Norman has held several posts within the private sector. As Occupational Hygiene Manager he conducted hygiene surveys for a range of industrial clients and in the role of National Health and Safety Adviser to BUPA Norman provided IOSH Managing Safely training for Managers and IOSH Working Safely for staff at their hospitals.

In addition to his long and proven practical experience, Norman has the following Academic and Professional Qualifications

  • MSc Occupational Health and Safety
  • Diploma in Radiological Protection

 

 

Charles Dye - Consultant and Trainer

Charles' initial training and work as an Architect has stood him in excellent stead as a professional consultant, particularly in the Construction industry, and he has gained extensive experience in both public and private sectors of industry in general.

His career in Health, Safety and Training commenced in 1994 at Aimspec where he held the position of Manager, leading a team of consultants offering construction specific health and safety advice. Charles then became Senior Health and Safety Consultant with Mentor® before taking up the position of National Health and Safety Operations Manager with NHBC.

His impressive portfolio of Academic and Professional Qualifications are as follows:

  • Currently undertaking MSc in Health and Safety Management
  • City & Guilds Qualification in Adult Training (CG7307)
  • NEBOSH Diploma
  • Diploma in Architecture
  • ARIAS - Associate of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland
  • RIBA - Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects
  • MRIPH - Member of the Royal Institute of Public Health
  • MIIRSM - Member of the International Institute of Risk & Safety Management
  • ARB - Registered Architect
  • MaPS - Member of the Association of Planning Supervisors
  • IOSH - Associate Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health
